Tanning Salon Survey 2007

Dermatologists Recommend $0.50 Per-Use Tanning Salon Fee to Support Sun Safety Education Programs

MINNEAPOLIS (August 14, 2007) –– City, state and federal governments should recoup health care costs and establish sun safety education programs by collecting fees of $0.50 per-use of tanning salons according to a survey of the nation's leading dermatologists.

For the last 5 years, sun protective clothing manufacturer Coolibar has conducted a survey among the nation’s leading dermatologists to determine their recommendations on issues related to sun safety. This year’s survey found that 74 percent of dermatologists support the establishment of a $0.50 per-use fee on tanning salon patrons.

"Doctors clearly recognize the impact that tanning salons have on public health,” said John Barrow, founder and president of Coolibar. "This survey shows that there is strong support for a reasonable use-based fee to help educate young children, teenagers and the general population on the risks of overexposure to UV radiation. The country's experience—like with per pack user fees on cigarettes—shows that funding education is necessary to improve public health."

The Coolibar survey, completed by 1,020 dermatologists, was conducted at the 2007 American Academy of Dermatology (AAD) Annual Meeting in Washington, DC.

Statistics on tanning salons from the American Academy of Dermatology:
  • The indoor tanning salon industry exceeds $2 billion in annual revenue
  • More than 1 million people per year go to an indoor tanning salon
  • Only 21 states have laws in place regulating tanning salon practices
