This original, genuine panama hat is light, soft and protective. Hand woven in Ecuador with natural fibers of the Toquilla Plant, our Panama Fedora represents centuries of tradition in hat-making.
Ultimate Guide to Panama Hats
A Panama hat is a reference to the straw material it is made from. It is neither a style nor a quality, but rather a hat - in any style and of any quality.
The hat is made from the plant carludovica palmata, which grows in the coastal lowlands of Western South America (not in Panama).
Panama hats have always been made in Ecuador, not in Panama.
Ecuador began producing the Panama hat as early as 1630!
During the California Gold Rush, individuals traveled through the Isthmus of Panama and purchased Panama Hats there. Purchasers told interested buyers that they were purchased in Panama, rather than mentioning that they were made in Ecuador.
When Theodore Roosevelt visited the Canal, he wore a Panama hat, which increased its popularity.
The single most important factor in determining the value of a Panama hat is the fineness of weave. Three other important factors that affect price are the evenness of the weave, the color of the straw, and the shaping.
Traditionally, all Panama hats were hand-blocked, a slow and laborious process. Afterwards, a clear sizing material is used to coat the hat. This stiffens the straw and helps the hat keep its shape.
Panama hats vary in the time they take to be woven. Some of the coarser woven hats may take a few hours whereas the finer hats from the towns of Biblian, Montecristi, and Cuenca which may take up to 5 months to weave!
There are many styles of Panama hats, but the most common are: Classic Fedora,Plantation, and Optimo. Coolibar’s take on the Panama Hat is inspired by the classic Australian outback hat which features a wider brim for better sun protection
Due to the range of fabrics and styles, each hat fits slightly different. See individual hat circumferences in the Highlights section of the product page. Our One Size hats are designed to fit most.
HOW TO DETERMINE YOUR HAT SIZE: Measure around your head, from the center of your forehead, keeping tape straight and parallel to the floor. Measure around fullest part.
All Coolibar fabrics have been approved as an effective UV protectant for covered areas. Coolibar is the first clothing company to receive The Skin Cancer Foundation’s Seal of Recommendation.

Looks great!I purchased a similar hat 2 years ago and looking to replace it but unfortunately you don't appear to be offering my size this time! I get many compliments on my current white Fedora, stays on while driving my convertible and sun damage has dropped tremendous vs baseball caps! I will check back again later for size.

Great look and fit but sweatyLooks great. Fits great and stays on even in my Miata at speed with the top down. Material feels like it was stamped out of a large plastic disk. In fact I had to hold it to the light to see the weave. Maybe that's what's necessary to block sun, but I would rather have a natural fabric hat.

Great Golf or Fishing HatI recently received this hat as a gift. It was entirely unexpected as I typically only see these hats in movies and TV. I plan to use it for playing golf this coming summer or when I am out on the lake or patio. The quality is evident by the firm but flexible construction. It is very light so after a little bit of wear you forget it is even on.
Be sure to measure the size of your head accurately, or use the measurements from a standard fitted baseball cap that isn't a stretch fit. Without an accurate measurement of your head size this hat will be too tight or much too loose. There isn't much "play" in the fit, which is great for a hat that I plan to wear for a few years.
