This original, genuine panama hat is light, soft and protective. Hand woven in Ecuador with natural fibers of the Toquilla Plant, our Panama Fedora represents centuries of tradition in hat-making.
Ultimate Guide to Panama Hats
A Panama hat is a reference to the straw material it is made from. It is neither a style nor a quality, but rather a hat - in any style and of any quality.
The hat is made from the plant carludovica palmata, which grows in the coastal lowlands of Western South America (not in Panama).
Panama hats have always been made in Ecuador, not in Panama.
Ecuador began producing the Panama hat as early as 1630!
During the California Gold Rush, individuals traveled through the Isthmus of Panama and purchased Panama Hats there. Purchasers told interested buyers that they were purchased in Panama, rather than mentioning that they were made in Ecuador.
When Theodore Roosevelt visited the Canal, he wore a Panama hat, which increased its popularity.
The single most important factor in determining the value of a Panama hat is the fineness of weave. Three other important factors that affect price are the evenness of the weave, the color of the straw, and the shaping.
Traditionally, all Panama hats were hand-blocked, a slow and laborious process. Afterwards, a clear sizing material is used to coat the hat. This stiffens the straw and helps the hat keep its shape.
Panama hats vary in the time they take to be woven. Some of the coarser woven hats may take a few hours whereas the finer hats from the towns of Biblian, Montecristi, and Cuenca which may take up to 5 months to weave!
There are many styles of Panama hats, but the most common are: Classic Fedora,Plantation, and Optimo. Coolibar’s take on the Panama Hat is inspired by the classic Australian outback hat which features a wider brim for better sun protection
Due to the range of fabrics and styles, each hat fits slightly different. See individual hat circumferences in the Highlights section of the product page. Our One Size hats are designed to fit most.
HOW TO DETERMINE YOUR HAT SIZE: Measure around your head, from the center of your forehead, keeping tape straight and parallel to the floor. Measure around fullest part.
All Coolibar fabrics have been approved as an effective UV protectant for covered areas. Coolibar is the first clothing company to receive The Skin Cancer Foundation’s Seal of Recommendation.

Stylish fedora UV protected sun hatVery nice sun hat with style. Good construction and tight weave. Every sunhat should come with a built in sweat band. This hat did not! No air vents along side of crown. Makes head sweat and increases temperature. Awesome style and brim width. I'm making it my fall winter sun hat.

Panama FedoraIt’s a beautiful hat, but way too big! Per the size guide and measurements it should have fit perfectly but it did not. Bums me out how expensive the hat was and I can’t even wear it.

Very good hatThis hat is at a very good price point for those that know anything about hats. No, it doesn't have a weave count like an expensive Montecristi, but it also doesn't cost $800. The hand is good, the hat is light and it looks much better than the picture on the company's website. Wore it in Phoenix over July 4th, temps about 107F, and this hat was truly a benefit. In that heat, the crown breathed well enough to be sufficiently cool and felt very comfortable with nothing touching me except the leather sweatband. When a monsoon-driven wind kicked up, that leather sweatband held the hat in place, no problem. One thing to mention, on mine, there is a turn in the bash. Can't say if that is intentional, eg "the Indy bash", or simply variability in constructing the hat. Doesn't really matter at all in my view; given the looks, the functionality and the price point, I give it five stars.

Perfect Lightweight Sun ProtectionI bought this for a summer trip to Hawaii- I'm a redhead and wanted a good all around hat for the trip (and future use) that offered a full brim for sun protection (and shade!). I've tried so many hats in the past that were just too hot, too tight and/or too floppy. This hat could not have been more perfect. It's super lightweight, has a nice wide brim, has a soft comfortable leather band on the inside, sits securely on your head, doesn't flop down in your face and looks great on top of all that! I've received a number of compliments on the hat and am recommending it to everyone I know!
A note about sizing- I followed the measuring instructions and initially was worried as the hat I received seemed a bit too large, but it turned out to be the perfect size and I wouldn't change a thing about the size.

Beautiful & Functional Hat!This hat was purchased after my other sun hat became distorted from getting wet too many times. I chose this one because I was able to pick out a size, and for someone with a small head, that’s important!! This hat fits great without being too tight, it is VERY lightweight (heavy sun hats are something I’ve had a problem with in the past), provides good sun coverage, and it is really beautiful. It was worth every penny!!!

Looks Good (for a hat)Actually I really do not like to wear hats, but due to frequent skin cancers I am forced to do so now. With that said, this is an expensive hat, but it looks good on me; and I am starting to enjoy wearing it. Again, it is very expensive; but I believe I am going to get my money's worth. This is my third or fourth Coolibar hat.
